Jesse Reed and Hamish Smyth discuss the Standards Manual reissue with It’s Nice That

Rob Alderson recently spoke with designers Hamish Smyth and Jesse Reed about their Standards Manual reissue. Smyth and Reed stumbled upon Massimo Vignelli and Bob Noorda’s original manual while searching for a tarp in the basement of design film Pentagram’s New York office. They quickly realized that the book would generate interest for a variety of reasons. First, Massimo Vignelli is a legendary designer whose work is largely admired, if not idolized, by designers. Second, the designs fall squarely in the purview of popular culture with millions of New Yorkers engaging with them every day.
