Slate reveals the history behind the NYCTA Standards Manual
Slate discussed the history behind the Standards Manual in a recent article by Kristen Hohenadel. Massimo Vignelli and Bob Noorda of the design firm Unimark International were commissioned to create the manual at a time when subway signage was inconsistent and confusing. The legendary designers spent four years on the project and the results became an extremely important piece of modern design. When Hamish Smyth and Jesse Reed accidentally found the manual in 2012, they were thrilled. They created a Kickstarter campaign to allow others to secure a copy of the manual. The response was spectacular. The full article can be found on Slate.
